Reading the Gap

The questions that keep coming back, and what they share.

Under the surface

What the questions share. Each question can be answered on its own, and each answer can be right, and still the questions come back. What they share isn't a topic. It is a premise that none of them states: that the answer is something more the asker must do. A question carries its assumptions inside it, and an answer that accepts the question accepts them too. Some questions only become possible once that premise is seen, like the one the scene ends near: what if it was never mine to fix?

In the song. Her version of the premise is in her own words: "I thought if I stopped pulling, we would both go down." Every question she could ask from inside that rule (how to row harder, how to patch faster) has an answer, and none of them reaches the rule.

What this doesn't claim. That these questions are wrong to ask, or that the effort behind them is misplaced. Sometimes the work really is the asker's. The point is only that a shared premise can sit underneath many questions without being seen, until they are set side by side.

Next to Why the Why Goes Missing. This page is about assumptions built into the questions someone asks. That one is about what happens to the reasons behind a choice: what could be seen, what was recorded, what survived, and what was inferred later.
