VERA VEIL

One Object, Two Shadows

Two shadows of one thing. Each is real. Neither is the whole.

The object itself. Turn it.

back wall: a circle
side wall: a square

Neither shadow was the whole.

Under the surface

The object. A cylinder as tall as it is wide casts a circle seen along its axis and a square seen from the side. Each shadow is an accurate view of something real. Neither is the object.

What the shadows show, and what they don't. Two accurate partial views can both be real without the explanations people build on them being equally sound. Seeing that a view is partial is a reason to look for the object, not a reason to treat every account of a cause as true.

In the song, the hands tearing out the patches are seen. What they meant to the person whose hands they were is not shown, and nothing here assumes it, or excuses the act because there was a point of view behind it.
